Borderline Books - FREE BOOKS - FREE MINDS

Borderline Books is a charity which collects used and unwanted books.  It then redistributes them  free of charge to groups and organisations working with people who are homeless, people struggling with addiction and recovery, young people's hostels, women’s refuges, refugee organisations and others with no funds for books.   The charity and a team of volunteers have supplied books to more than 70 organisations, ranging from autism support groups to prisons to schools.

The project is run by the Kittiwake Trust and it aims to encourage greater literacy and foster a love of reading and books. They thrive on being a truly inclusive service, crossing boundaries of race, colour, age, wealth and health throughout the North East.

In 2014 they gave away 7106 books.  This year they have given away 3416 so far and are well on the way to another record-breaking year.

The charity is aiming to start up some BookSpaces in Durham and other places.

Book donations are also welcomed – please contact Borderline Books if you would like to donate books.

It's Up 2 U is back!

It’s Up 2 U is back!

Following the success of the previous two It’s Up 2 U schemes, the Derwent Valley Partnership will be delivering its third It’s Up 2 U scheme in 2015 which will provide an opportunity for groups to apply for a grant to deliver a project or activity - local residents will then be asked to vote for their preferred projects at a specially arranged event in late November 2015. Full details including how to apply will be released over the coming weeks!

It’s Up 2 U Steering Group Volunteers

To progress the development of the scheme and to ensure that local residents, partners and community representatives have the opportunity to be involved in the process, the Partnership will be creating a Steering Group to help us design the scheme (funding eligibility, project and voting criteria and designing the publicity materials). This is a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of one of our most successful initiatives. If you would like to be involved in the Steering Group, please contact a member of the DVP Team on 03000 260 725 or e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots. The Derwent Valley Partnership will be hosting a Celebration of Innovation event on Wednesday 24th June 2015, 5.30pm, Consett AFC, Belle Vue Stadium, Delves Lane, Consett. DH8 7BF, which will provide an opportunity for local residents to learn about a range of projects that have been developed across County Durham aimed at providing activities for children and young people, improving health and wellbeing, supporting older people and improving employment, education and training opportunities.
