Included in this section are summaries of available funding opportunities which community groups may wish to apply for. For more detailed information, community groups are advised to visit the individual website of the funder. Please take note of the timescales / deadlines for applying for funding and the funding criteria which you will need to meet in order to be eligible to apply.

Sport Relief Community Cash Grants

Sport Relief Community Cash grants are available for projects in the UK that are helping local people who are disadvantaged.

Small voluntary and community sector groups including constituted voluntary and community groups; charities; and social enterprises; etc. can apply for grants of between £500 and £1,000 for projects that helps people of all ages:

  • Feel more included in their community
  • Builds their skills
  • Increases their sense of achievement.

The type of activities that can be funded include:

  • Foodbanks
  • Counselling and advice services
  • Disability sports clubs/activities
  • Training, skill building and volunteering projects; etc.

Priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community and are undertaking actions as a means of addressing these needs. County Durham Community Foundation - Funding available for voluntary and community groups

Funding of up to £5,000 for voluntary and community groups based in County Durham & Darlington.

For the first time ever the Foundation will open its doors to voluntary and community groups, to give them a chance to come and speak with a member of staff on a one to one basis in their offices on Tuesday 2nd February 2016, 10:00am - 4:00pm at County Durham Community Foundation,Victoria House, Whitfield Court, St John’s Road, Meadowfield Industrial Estate, Durham, DH7 8XL.

Sport England Flood Relief Fund Expanded

Sport England has increased its emergency flood relief fund to £400,000 to help repair sports pitches and facilities destroyed by this winter's unprecedented rainfall.

Clubs, local authorities and other community sports organisations in affected areas can apply to help pay for emergency repairs and financial support can be provided in as little as three weeks through National Lottery funding. The funds can be used to pay for repairs to damaged facilities such as:

  • Rugby and cricket pitches
  • Water sports centres
  • Pavilions
  • Changing rooms
  • Floodlights.

Grants of up to £5,000 can be awarded quickly while larger amounts for extensive repairs will take a little longer.  The deadline for applications is 1st February 2016.

High Sheriff Awards 2015/2016 now open for applications!

The High Sheriff of Durham, James Fenwick, is working in partnership with the Sir James Knott Trust and County Durham Community Foundation to spearhead the High Sheriff’s awards.

He is calling for community groups to submit their entries for these leading community awards that reward young people for doing ground-breaking and life-changing work across the community.

Groups will have the chance to win up to £3,000 which could have a significant impact on their work.

Postcode Local Trust Opens for Applications

The Postcode Local Trust which is a grant-giving body funded by players of People's Postcode Lottery has announced that it is now open for applications.

The Trust provides financial support for charities and good causes which help communities enhance their natural environment in a way that benefits the wider community. Registered charities in England, Scotland & Wales can apply from £500 - £20,000 (£10,000 in Wales) whilst other constituted not for profit organisations may apply for up to £2,000 for community based projects that improve local ecology and habitats, encourage bio-diversity and benefit the wider environment. The type of projects that can be funded include:

  • The creation of community gardens
  • Habitat restoration projects which benefit biodiversity and which provide lasting benefits to a community such as on-going recreation activities, flood prevention schemes, natural hedgerow boundaries
  • Tree planting or creation of community orchard projects
  • Outdoor education projects delivered with local communities by environmental charities
  • Green-energy projects which create more sustainable solutions to lowering energy costs for a community; etc.

The closing date for applications is the 29th January 2016.
