Free Employability Training

Do you need to develop essential skills that will help you get a job?

The Derwentside Council for Voluntary Services (DCVS) is working in partnership with New College Durham to provide free 'Routes into Employment' training that will help individuals develop their skills and knowledge to maximise their chances of employment. By attending this free training, individuals can gain qualifications in First Aid, Health and Safety and Manual Handling.

You are eligible to attend this training if you are:

  • A lone parent, or
  • Claiming Incapacity Benefit, or
  • On no benefits, or
  • Aged 18-24 yrs old - and unemployed for 6 months or less, or
  • Aged 25 yrs plus - and unemployed for 18 months or less

During the training, you will be provided with help in accessing work experience/volunteering opportunities, help with Jobsearch i.e. CV writing, preparing for interview and making job applications.

The training is being held on 28th, 29th and 30th September 2011 from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day in Glenroyd House, Medomsley Road, Consett. DH8 5HL. You must be able to attend all three days of the training.

The Rotary Club of Consett

The Rotary Club of Consett meets every Tuesday at 6.30pm in the Kings Restaurant, Shotley Bridge and new members are always welcome. The Rotary Club keeps everyone updated about their events and projects through their regular Rotary Community Bulletins so keep your eyes peeled for these in your local area.

The Club have been working hard over the past year to arrange a number of popular annual events including Annual Cricket Day and Annual Charity Golf Day (which raised £9,000 last year - great news!). Further details about these two events can be found in the 'Events' section of the website.

Public Rep Board Vacancy

The Derwent Valley Partnership Board has 21 members, 7 public representatives, 7 Elected representatives and 7 partner representatives. The Board are the decision makers within the Partnership structure and meet regularly to progress issues and allocate funding to local projects.

Unfortunately, one of the public representatives has recently left the Board which means the Derwent Valley Partnership now has a vacancy. If you would like to express an interest in applying for the position of public representative, please contact a member of the AAP Team on 03000 260 725 to obtain an expression of interest form. The deadline for completed expression of interest forms is Friday 9th September.

Sport and Physical Activity Awards

Leisureworks will be hosting their annual Sports and Physical Activity Awards on the evening of Friday 16th September 2011 at the Empire Theatre in Consett. There is still time for local residents and sports clubs to nominate as part of this award scheme. The awards highlight the achievements of local people in sport and physical activity including coaches, schools, volunteers, clubs, performers and participants.

Free training for community groups

The Durham Rural Community Council (DRCC), with partners in Northumberland and Tees Valley, has secured funding from the Big Lottery Fund to deliver free training courses. The project will help management committees in community buildings to learn about financial management and easy accounting.
