Durham Community Action run Community Development Workshops to assist voluntary and community groups to manage their organisations effectively.

Health and Safety for Trustees within the Voluntary Sector

Tuesday 4th March 10.00 - 11.30am

This workshop is aimed at volunteer led organisations and community groups. It will cover understanding trustees’ responsibilities for health and safety in their organisation, establishing what needs to be included in a policy, understanding basic Health and Safety law and identifying relevant health and safety needs for staff and managers

Protecting your Charity's Finances

Tuesday 11th March 10.00 - 11.30am

This workshop is aimed at volunteer led organisations and community groups. It will cover the practicalities of managing finance for your organisation, developing a financial controls policy to minimise risk and planning for future sustainability

Understanding GDPR for Voluntary and Community Organisations

Tuesday 18th March 10.00 - 11.30am

This workshop is aimed at volunteer led organisations and community groups. It will focus on understanding your responsibilities and developing a data protection policy. The session will cover gaining an understanding of what personal data is. understanding the six lawful bases to process data and identifying what needs to be included in your GDPR policy.

Small Steps to becoming a Greener Voluntary Organisation

Tuesday 25th March 10.00 - 11.30am

This workshop is aimed at trustees and staff from voluntary organisations across County Durham who want to do their bit to become ‘greener.’

It will cover why we all need to take action now, understanding trustee responsibilities within your organisation, what to include in an environmental policy, creating an action plan for a greener organisation and what we can do to support our community to take action

Managing Risk using a Risk Register

Tuesday 1st April 10.00 - 11.30am

This workshop is aimed at volunteer led organisations and community groups. It will look at developing a risk register and look at ways to mitigate risk. The session will cover the practicalities of risk management, understanding trustee responsibilities for managing risk, being more competent in completing a risk register and discuss ways to reduce risk.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Workshop

Thursday 3rd April 1.30 - 3.00pm

This workshop will cover the benefits of DBS and you (employer or voluntary organisation) working together, the different levels of DBS check and when an employee is eligible for a check and what ‘regulated activity’ is.

It will be delivered by Julia Mitchinson from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Introduction to Safeguarding

Tuesday 8th April 10.00 - 11.30am

This workshop is aimed at new trustees, staff or volunteers within the voluntary sector. It will help you to gain a basic understanding of safeguarding, understand personal responsibilities for safeguarding, identify different types of abuse and harm, recognise signs of possible safeguarding issues and know what to do if you have a safeguarding concern

Prevent Training 

Tuesday 8th April 2.00 - 4.00pm

Through a live online Zoom event, Andy Bailey, Lead Officer for Safe Durham Partnership, Economic Partnership and Prevent will deliver a workshop to provide awareness of Prevent. 

The training will support and update your knowledge in protecting people from radicalising influences, supporting you to build resilience to extremist narratives, identifying any vulnerabilities or worrying changes in behaviour and knowing what to do if you have concerns
