‘A dementia-friendly community is a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported and confident they can contribute to community life.’

The Benfieldside, Blackhill, Bridgehill and Shotley Bridge Community Partnership (known locally as the BBB & SB Community Partnership) have been working hard in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Society and other partners to make their area Dementia Friendly.

They have been actively involved in the creation of a Dementia Friendly Café at Sweetharts Bakery and Bistro so that those living with dementia, their families, friends and carers can meet in lovely surroundings.

The launch of the Dementia Friendly Café in Blackhill will take place on Monday 29th January 2018 in Sweetharts at 2pm. Dean Richards MBE, Newcastle Falcons Director of Rugby will be in attendance to carry out the official opening.

R.S.V.P - To gauge numbers and if you would like to attend the Dementia Friendly Café opening, please contact: John O’Connor (Chair of the BBB & SB Community Partnership) at the earliest opportunity.

The BBB & SB community partnership are also working with Durham Constabulary to help keep dementia clients safe and to help avoid social isolation. The Herbert Protocol (HP) is an essential part of this work and the Police will give a briefing on the HP. Attendees will also hear from a carer of a person living with dementia. Staff in Sweethart’s café are Dementia Friends who have learnt a bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and can help to make life better for people living with dementia in their communities. The café environment includes dementia friendly signage, menus and toilet facilities.
